Slats vs Glazing: Wind, Light, and What Actually Costs Less

I'm standing by the fence with a customer, and he shows me a photo from the internet: a gazebo with full glazing, bright like a greenhouse. He says — I want that. I answer honestly: after two summers there'll be condensation on the glass every morning, and it'll be an oven in July if the roof isn't ventilated. Then starts a conversation I have at least once a month. Slats or glass. My straight answer: in our climate, nine times out of ten slats win on both price and comfort. Glass only makes sense in one specific situation, which I'll get to.

What wind does to glass and to slats

Full glazing blocks wind completely — that's a fact, and that's exactly why people install it. But a solid barrier acts like a sail. If the gazebo stands in an open spot, the wind load doesn't go into the air — it goes into the frame and the frame's fixings to the structure. My frame is standard — 120×120 posts, 90×90 top beam — it holds up fine. But sliding glass systems, over time, start to wobble in the tracks, the rollers clog with sand and snow, and freeze up in winter.

Slats work differently. A board with a 15–20 mm gap breaks up a gust without creating a solid wall of pressure. Air passes through, speed drops, and it's still quieter inside than outside. It's the difference between a shield and a picket fence. Wind doesn't knock down a picket fence, because it blows through.

Light: glass isn't always brighter

You'd think glass means maximum light. In practice, clear glass either gives a direct glare that blinds you at certain hours, or, if it's tinted to cut the glare, the light turns grey and murky. Slats with the right spacing give diffused light all day, shadows move, and inside it feels like you're under a tree, not in an aquarium.

There's another effect customers never think about until the first autumn: condensation. The temperature swing between outside and inside a glazed, unheated, unventilated gazebo causes the glass to fog up morning and evening. Slats physically don't have this problem — there's no enclosed volume of air.

Money: comparing facts, not feelings

Slats are the same 28×120 boards used for decking, just mounted vertically on the wall with a gap. In terms of material and labor, it's a relatively small add-on to the frame, because the board and the fastener — a 6×120 screw with pre-drilling — are already part of my production, no new technology needs to be brought in.

Glazing is a separate system: frame, tracks, rollers, seals, the glass or polycarbonate itself. Even a basic sliding glazing setup for a 3×4 meter gazebo usually costs several thousand euros without installation — comparable to the price of the entire wooden structure, sometimes more. And that's a one-time cost that doesn't end at installation.

Maintenance — the thing people forget to factor in

I treat slats with oil and antiseptic before assembly, including the ends. Touch it up every two to three years, and that's it, the wood lasts for decades. I don't use varnish outdoors, as a matter of principle: it cracks after one or two winters because wood and the varnish film expand differently, and then rot sets in under the cracks. Oil doesn't have this problem, because it soaks in instead of sitting as a layer.

Glazing needs different upkeep: the rollers need cleaning and lubricating, the seals lose elasticity over time and start letting drafts through, and the glass needs washing — on an open gazebo it gets dirty faster than the windows of a house. On top of that, sliding systems from budget manufacturers often jam after the first serious snowy winter.

When glass actually makes sense

There's one situation where I myself recommend glass, or at least partial glazing — if the gazebo is heated and used in winter as a proper room, like a summer kitchen with a stove. Then a solid barrier against wind and snow is justified, because the goal isn't "sit outside in the fresh air" but "be in a warm room with a view of the garden." But at that point it's not really a garden gazebo in the usual sense anymore — it's a light structure, and it needs a different approach to the foundation and insulation.

My controversial opinion: sliding glazing on an ordinary unheated summer gazebo is overpaying for an illusion of protection that in practice creates more problems than it solves. It doesn't fully remove the wind, and it adds condensation and upkeep.
